Bormolini
joined
the
U.S
.
Army
Air
Corps
during
Christmas
break
in his
first
semester
of
college
. He was
called
into
active
duty
in
May
of
1943
, and
went
to
basic
training
in
Miami
Beach
,
Fl
. He then
went
to
Greensboro
,
NC
to
await
assignment
. He was
assigned
to
mechanic
school
,
where
he
learned
how to
work
on
C-47’s
. As
part
of his
training
, the
men
would
take
longer
flights
on the
weekends
to
simulate
how
long
missions
overseas
would
take
. As a
result
,
Bormolini
was
able
to
see
much
of the
United
States
and on
one
occasion
was
able
to
fly
home
to
see
his
parents
over
the
weekend
. His
unit
initially
thought
they would be
going
to
Europe
, as they were
issued
winter
flight
suits
, but
instead
they
sailed
to
New
Guinea
. His
unit
flew
around
much
of the
Southern
Pacific
area
, and at
one
point
Bormolini’s
crew
(he
was the
flight
engineer)
flew
44
days
straight
.
After
the
atomic
bomb
was
dropped
, his
unit
was
sent
to
Biak
and then
Japan
. He was
discharged
, and
returned
home
in
1946
.
During
the
interview
Bormolini
also
discusses
a
trip
he
made
to
see
the
unveiling
of the
World
War
II
monument
in
Washington
,
D.C
.
