enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Navy
at the
age
of
17
, with his
parent’s
permission
.
Although
World
War
II
had
ended
, he was
still
anxious
to
join
. He
went
to
basic
training
at
Camp
Peary
,
Va.
, and from there was
transferred
to
Oakland
,
Calif
. to
await
assignment
.
Hill
was
sent
to
Guam
,
where
he was
part
of
running
the
Red
Cross
Unit
. His
job
was to
maintain
the
staff
of
local
people
who
did
the
laundry
and
cleaning
.
Hill
was
anxious
for
sea
duty
though
, and
shortly
asked
for
reassignment
to the
U.S.S
.
Moale
,
DD693-Destroyer
.
Because
he had
no
experience
aboard
ship
, he was
made
a
deckhand
. The
ship
travelled
to
Manila
,
Tsing
Tao
(China)
, and
Japan
.
Hill
was
able
to
see
a
large
part
of the
Pacific
. The
Moale
then
travelled
back
to the
U.S.
,
stopping
at
Pearl
Harbor
on the
way
to
San
Francisco
.
Hill
was then
assigned
to
U.S.S
.
Waldron
out
of
Norfolk
,
Va
. The
Waldron
travelled
to
European
ports
in
England
,
France
,
Germany
, and then
finally
down
through
the
Straits
of
Gibraltar
to the
Mediterranean
on
maneuvers
.
During
the
interview
Hill
describes
memorable
events
from the
time
he and the
other
sailors
spent
in
Italy
. On the
Waldron’s
return
to the
United
States
in
1952
,
Hill
was
discharged
from the
navy
. He
returned
home
where
he
went
to
college
using
the
G.I
.
Bill
, and then
began
working
at The
Hartford
,
where
he
remained
until
his
retirement
in
1990
.
