.
Orio
recorded

June
6
Description
Interview
conducted
by
Jane
Natoli
.
Enzo
Edward
Orio
joined
the
U.S
.
Army
in
1944
. He
went
to
basic
training
at
Camp
Polk
,
La
. On
Thanksgiving
Day
of
1944
,
Orio’s
unit
shipped
over
to
England
. From there they were
transferred
to
Le
Havre
,
France
to
fight
in the
European
Theatre
.
It
was
very
cold
, and
many
times
the
soldier’s
rations
would be
frozen
. His
unit
would
travel
across
Europe
,
trying
to
capture
small
towns
that had been
invaded
by the
Germans
,
sometimes
moving
through
three
towns
per
day
.
Due
to the
extreme
cold
and
sleeping
accommodations
of
foxholes
,
Orio
was
transported
to the
hospital
,
because
he
could
no
longer
walk
and was
partially
frozen
. He was
placed
back
into his
unit
after
his
hospital
stay
, and
when
the
war
was
declared
over
, they
moved
to
Czechoslovakia
.
Orio
was then
placed
in a
service
position
, and
worked
in the
Post
Office
in
Munich
for a
time
.
It
was there that he
met
up
with
three
other
men
, and they
devised
an
idea
for a
show
,
similar
in
nature
to
USO
entertainment
, but with
GI’s
and
civilian
volunteers
.
Orio
was
discharged
in
April
of
1946
, and
returned
to
CT
where
he
worked
at the
Post
Office
until
his
retirement
in
1985
. He has
remained
active
in
Veteran’s
Organizations
,
having
participated
in
six
different
associations
.
