Gallagher
grew
up
in
New
Haven
,
Ct
. He
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
just
after
graduation
from
high
school
. He had
taken
military
examinations
in
high
school
that
led
him to be
placed
in the
Army
Special
Training
Program
(ASTP)
. He was
sent
to
Camp
Fannin
,
Texas
for
basic
training
.
Gallagher
recalls
some
of his
instructors
and the
rigorous
training
he
went
through
there.
Because
of an
infection
, he was
held
back
one
week
from
graduating
basic
training
, and
instead
sent
to
join
a
different
unit
. He was then
sent
to
Hawaii
where
he was
placed
in the
7th
Division
,
32nd
Infantry
Regiment
as a
member
of the
mortar
squad
. In
Hawaii
his
platoon
underwent
rigorous
jungle
training
in
preparation
for
fighting
in the
Pacific
Theater
. His
unit
was then
sent
overseas
,
where
they
stopped
at
Kwajalein
and
observed
the
devastation
on the
island
of
Truk
. In
October
of
1944
they were
sent
to
Leyte
Gulf
in the
Philippines
,
where
they were the
3rd
group
to
enter
into the
invasion
.
It
was this
battle
in
which
Gallagher
was
badly
injured
. He
received
a
very
severe
wound
to his
leg
. He
is
unable
to
remember
the
incident
,
only
waking
up
afterward
in the
aid
station
. He was
eventually
brought
to the
54th
General
Hospital
on
New
Guinea
where
he
went
through
months
of
healing
and
physical
therapy
. He was
placed
in a
Replacement
Depot
to
await
assignment
to a
new
unit
.
Gallagher
had
wanted
to
return
to his
original
unit
, but the
commanding
officer
remained
wary
of
putting
him
back
into a
combat
platoon
. He
instead
ended
up
in a
warehouse
transportation
platoon
,
where
he
remained
for the
duration
of the
war
.
After
his
discharge
from the
army
, he
received
a
B.S
. and a
law
degree
from
Georgetown
University
using
the
G.I
.
Bill
. He
joined
the
Military
Order
of the
Purple
Heart
and
returned
to
Connecticut
.
