Title	Oral history interview with Kevin M. Downey on 2007 Aug. 26
Description	Interview conducted by Shane Matthews. Kevin M. Downey enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2000 after graduating from high school. He chose to enlist because his father had also been in the navy, and he knew it would be a good educational experience. He left for boot camp in Chicago, IL, but due to an over enrollment at the camp, he and a few others instead had to stay at a hotel while space in basic training was made available. After boot camp, Downey was transferred to Charleston, SC for engineering school. He describes the daily routine that he experienced while in training. Downey graduated from "A" School in January of 2001, and then continued his education in "Power" School. He describes in detail what this additional training entailed. The terrorist bombings of September 11th happened while he was still in South Carolina, and Downey explains what it was like to be on a military base on that day. After training, Downey was stationed on a nuclear submarine, in the interview he tells of their living conditions, the stress, and what they did for entertainment on the boat. As of the date of the interview, Downey was enlisted in the navy until 2012, and planned on making the navy his career.
