Elaine
Gemma
was
motivated
to
serve
in the
military
after
growing
up
hearing
her
uncle
tell
stories
about
his
WWII
Navy
experiences
. Her
three
brothers
all
served
in the
military
and she
joined
the
Air
Force
on
active
duty
after
being
recruited
while
a
senior
at
nursing
school
.
After
Basic
Training
at
Maxwell
Air
Force
Base
(AFB)
in
Montgomery
,
AL
.
during
the
height
of the
civil
rights
movement
, she
served
as an
operating
room
nurse
as
well
as a
ward
nurse
.
Following
her
training
as a
flight
nurse
, she was
assigned
to a
security
base
in
Pakistan
where
she
served
with
five
other
nurses
for
fifteen
months
.
During
this
time
, she
experienced
the
heat
,
poverty
and
crowds
of the
region
as
well
as their
unequal
treatment
of
women
. From
Pakistan
,
Gemma
served
in
Germany
at
Rhein-Main
AFB
for
three
years
and
flew
on
medical
evacuations
of
military
personnel
and their
families
.
Although
she
served
at the
height
of the
Vietnam
War
, her
assignments
did
not
include
these
troops
.
After
Germany
,
Gemma
was
posted
to
Travis
AFB
and
finished
her
military
career
at
Lackland
AFB
.
Due
to
complications
from
surgery
while
at
Travis
,
Gemma
retired
early
,
ending
her
dreams
to be a
career
nurse
with the
Air
Force
.
Following
her
retirement
,
Gemma
remained
active
in the
Society
of
Air
Force
Nurses
,
Women
in
Military
Service
in
America
, and
American
Legion
Post
201
in
Worcester
,
MA
.
