Sadoski
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
when
he was
18
years
old
.
Sadoski
trained
with the
Horse
Calvary
at
Fort
Riley
,
Kansas
at the
time
when
it
was
still
segregated
. He
served
in
Northern
Africa
under
Patton
and
eventually
transferred
to
serve
under
General
Darby
as
one
of
Darby’s
Rangers
. His
company
trained
with
British
Commandos
and was
transported
to
Sicily
prior
to the
battle
to
capture
Messina
. The
Rangers
moved
into
Naples
where
they were
captured
by
German
troops
,
marched
to the
Coliseum
in
Rome
and then
transported
by
train
to a
work
camp
in
Poland
.
Although
he was
instrumental
in
helping
49
soldiers
escape
during
the
transport
he was
left
in the
boxcar
with
two
remaining
soldiers
.
Many
of these
escaped
soldiers
went
on to
join
the
Italian
Underground
while
many
of the
escaped
Jewish
soldiers
were
saved
from the
Hitler’s
death
camps
.
Sadoski
escaped
while
a
German
POW
and was
captured
and
forced
to
serve
in the
Russian
Army
in
charge
of
Mongolian
Cossack
troops
. At the
end
of the
war
, he
barely
escaped
being
executed
by the
Russian
Army
when
nearby
American
troops
recognized
his
voice
and
rescued
him.
