Title	Oral history interview with William Dean Kleinert recorded 2003 Nov. 20
Description	Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Kleinert was in law school when he was given a draft date of November 20, 1968. He instead chose to enlist in the Air Force before the draft date so he could delay his enrollment. He was opposed to the Vietnam War, but had decided to make the best of the situation. He attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base which lasted for six weeks. He was then assigned to Lowry Air Force Base for a twelve week course in photo processing. Kleinert describes his time in training as very regimental. He shipped over to Tan Sun Nhut Air Force Base (Vietnam) in February of 1970, where he worked as a photo processor. He was stationed on the base for his entire year of service, but he also had a small apartment in Saigon. Kleinert enlisted for an additional six months of overseas duty, when the Air Force promised him a 30 day leave and a trip to anywhere in the world of his choosing. After his eighteen months of duty were over, he returned to the United States where he was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He was discharged from the military in January of 1973. Although, he eventually returned home, he decided not to reenroll in law school, instead taking a job in higher education. Kleinert also discusses the friendships made in the military and what they did for entertainment, in addition to addressing the drug usage in Vietnam.
