Title
Oral
history
interview
with
Joseph
Niedermayer
recorded
2009
July
24
Description
Interview
conducted
by
Eileen
Hurst
.
Joseph
Niedermayer
enlisted
in the
United
States
Navy
in
October
of
1971
. He
chose
the
navy
because
his
draft
number
was
very
low
, and he
wanted
to
choose
the
branch
of
service
that he would be a
part
of
rather
than be
assigned
to
one
he
did
not
like
. He
did
his
basic
training
at the
Great
Lakes
Naval
training
center
in
Illinois
.
Since
it
was
during
the
winter
, the
recruits
had to
sign
waivers
called
"
Black
Flags
". This was
because
it
was
so
cold
outside
that
you
could
freeze
to
death
in a
very
short
amount
of
time
.
After
graduation
from
basic
training
,
Niedermayer
had
24
hours
before
he was to
report
to his
duty
station
in
Alameda
, Ca. He was
assigned
to the
U.S.S
.
Enterprise
,
which
was a
nuclear
aircraft
carrier
assigned
to the
South
China
Sea
,
where
its
purpose
was to
patrol
the
waters
around
Vietnam
, and was
sometimes
engaged
in
naval
combat
.
Niedermayer's
job
on the
ship
was in the
weapons
division
,
which
actually
operated
seven
decks
below
the
main
deck
. He
describes
what
life
on the
ship
was
like
, as
well
as what they
encountered
in
terms
of
weather
and
combat
on
board
.
After
the
ship
finished
its
mission
in the
waters
of
Vietnam
, they then
sailed
to the
Indian
Ocean
to
assist
the
island
of
Mauritius
which
was in
need
as a
result
of a
large
typhoon
.
Niedermayer
also
discusses
daily
life
in the
interview
including
how the
men
kept
in
touch
, what they
ate
, the
stress
they
encountered
, and what they
did
for
entertainment
. He was
discharged
from the
navy
in
October
of
1975
, and
although
he
considered
re-enlisting
, he was
deterred
from
doing
so
,
because
of
some
poor
treatment
from his
commanding
officer
. He
returned
to
Connecticut
and
used
the
G.I
.
Bill
to
continue
his
education
.
Shortly
after
returning
home
he
began
a
career
with the
Connecticut
Department
of
Public
Safety
,
where
he
still
works
to the
date
of the
interview
. He also
joined
the
VFW
, and has been
able
to
attend
a
reunion
of the
U.S.S
.
Enterprise
.
