John
Maltese
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1943
.
After
basic
training
at
Camp
Edwards
, in
Massachusetts
he was
assigned
to the
462nd
Amphibian
Truck
Company
and
trained
at
Ft
.
Moultrie
in
South
Carolina
.
Maltese
trained
as an
amphibian
“duck”
driver
and was
shipped
overseas
to
Liverpool
,
England
on
January
15
,
1944
with his
entire
company
.
Maltese
and the
entire
462nd
Company
took
part
in
Exercise
Tiger
, a
doomed
D-Day
training
exercise
which
was
attacked
by
6
German
PT
boats
after
a
malfunction
message
machine
allowed
communications
to be
overheard
by the
German
forces
. This
breach
in
security
resulted
in the
loss
of
752
men
,
thirty
ducks
and
three
LST’s
.
Maltese
recounts
the
aftermath
where
the
“water
was
red”
,
families
were not
notified
until
years
later
,
survivors
were
court-martialed
if they
wrote
home
about
this
tragedy
, and the
commanding
officer
,
Admiral
Moon
,
committed
suicide
the
following
day
. His
company
eventually
landed
at
Dover
and
took
part
in
moving
ammunition
,
gas
, and
rations
to the
front
lines
.
After
D-Day
,
Maltese
returned
to the
states
for a
30
day
leave
and
returned
to the
Pacific
campaign
,
spending
eleven
months
on the
beaches
of
Okinawa
moving
supplies
to the
artillery
,
infantry
,
special
units
, and
British
Military
forces
. He was
discharged
on
January
17
,
1946
and
married
his
fiancée
,
Grace
, in
June
of the
same
year
.
Having
joined
the
New
York
National
Guard
, he was
called
into
service
in
1950
and
served
at
Ft
.
Lee
as a
basic
training
officer
until
1952
when
he was
discharged
from
service
but
held
in the
Reserves
until
1956
.
Following
the
war
, he
worked
at a
liquor
store
in the
Bowery
in
NYC
and
eventually
worked
for
Seagram’s
as a
regional
manager
. He
is
actively
involved
in the
American
Legion
, and
while
Commander
of his
post
created
the
“Veteran
of the
Month”
program
honoring
deceased
veterans
.
