Frank
Maglaty
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1943
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Miami
,
Fl
. He was also
tested
by the
army
to
determine
what
job
he would be
suited
to, and was
transferred
to the
Army
Air
Corps
as a
result
of the
exam
.
Maglaty
trained
to be a
flight
engineer
on a
B-17
aircraft
in
Amarillo
,
Tx
. and
Burbank
, Ca. He was then
sent
to
Sperone
,
Italy
,
where
the
Air
Corps
had
set
up
an
air
base
. On
Maglaty’s
first
mission
, the
crew’s
plane
was
shot
down
over
Czechoslovakia
, and
crash
landed
. The
crew
survived
unharmed
and
escaped
Czechoslovakia
after
a
two
week
trek
to a
secret
allied
base
.
Maglaty
flew
30
missions
out
of the
Italian
base
, with
assignments
ranging
from
bombing
German
factories
to
bombing
oil
refineries
on the
coast
of the
Adriatic
Sea
.
After
30
missions
he was
sent
back
to the
United
States
, and
shortly
after
was
discharged
in
Westover
,
Mass
.
