.
Nicholas
P
.
Greci
joined
the
U.S
.
Coast
Guard
after
the
bombing
of
Pearl
Harbor
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Sheepshead
Bay
,
Brooklyn
,
NY
. He was then
sent
to
St
.
Augustine
,
FL
for
beach
patrol
duty
.
Greci
thought
beach
patrol
was
boring
and
requested
sea
duty
. He was then
transferred
back
to
New
York
,
where
he was
placed
on
destroyer
escort
PC
469
.
It
was their
duty
to
protect
convoys
of
ships
traveling
from
New
York
to
England
, and from
Miami
to
Guantanamo
Bay
from
submarine
attacks
.
Although
, they
encountered
submarines
on
almost
all
of the
convoys
, there was
only
one
instance
where
a
ship
was
hit
by
submarine
fire
.
PC
469
then
received
orders
for
San
Diego
,
Calif
. In
San
Diego
the
crew
was
sent
to
amphibious
school
to
train
for
duty
in the
Pacific
. In
1944
they
left
from
Pearl
Harbor
in a
convoy
with the
4th
Marine
Division
to
Iwo
Jima
. Their
job
in
Iwo
Jima
was to
back
up
the
marines
from the
water
.
Greci
describes
seeing
the
battle
from a
thousand
feet
off
the
shore
, and what the
ship
encountered
as
part
of the
battle
.
After
three
weeks
in
Iwo
Jima
,
PC
469
was
sent
to
Leyte
Gulf
to
prepare
for the
invasion
of
Okinawa
. On
April
1
,
1944
the
ship
again
provided
support
off
the
southern
shore
of
Okinawa
. The
crew
encountered
suicide
boat
attacks
(Shinyo)
as
well
as
suicide
swimmers
. In
August
of
1945
,
Greci
took
a
30
day
leave
and
returned
to the
United
States
. At this
time
the
war
ended
when
the
atomic
bomb
was
dropped
, and he
remained
in the
U.S
.
working
in a
separation
center
in
San
Francisco
instead
of
returning
to
overseas
duty
.
Greci
was
discharged
in
March
of
1946
, and
spent
the
next
two
months
hitchhiking
home
to the
east
coast
. In
1985
he
joined
the
Iwo
Jima
Survivors
Association
.
