Robert
Campbell
was
living
in
Springfield
,
Vt
.
when
he was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
. He was
one
of the
first
people
to
receive
a
draft
notice
after
it
was
put
into
effect
. He
passed
the
test
and
went
into
pilots
training
in the
Air
Corps
, but
during
a
flight
test
,
it
was
determined
that he
did
not have any
depth
perception
. He was then
transferred
to the
regular
army
.
Since
he was an
officer
, he
ended
up
as a
company
commander
in
Fort
Knox
,
Tenn
. as a
basic
training
instructor
before
he
shipped
overseas
. He was
married
in
1943
, and he
shipped
over
to
England
one
day
after
his
first
anniversary
.
Campbell
was
shipped
over
as a
replacement
in the
infantry
;
however
,
once
he
arrived
in
France
, he was
instead
put
in
charge
of the
Post
Exchange
at the
third
army
headquarters
. He also
ran
the
company
laundry
and
dry
cleaning
services
.
During
the
interview
Campbell
tells
the
story
of how he
met
General
Patton
, and
ate
dinner
at his
house
. He was
discharged
in
September
of
1945
.
