Title	Oral history interview with Edward J. McKenna recorded 2007 Jan. 17
Description	Interview conducted by Amy Arsenault. Edward J. McKenna was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952, at the age of 20. He went to Fort Dix, NJ for basic training, and then went on to advanced infantry training. He also attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. to learn Cantonese. McKenna was taught this language in preparation for being sent into the Korean War as a translator. However, as the war began to wind down there was not as high a need for this position, so he was instead sent to Berlin, Germany. In Berlin, he was in charge of the mail room. McKenna describes his time in Berlin, including what it was like to work next to the Soviet sector of East Berlin as Cold War tensions were increasing. He also discusses the daily life of the soldiers on base including the food, mail service, entertainment, and R and R. He was discharged from the army on September 20, 1954. He returned home to Hartford, Ct. where he married and started work again within a month of discharge.
