McKenna
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1952
, at the
age
of
20
. He
went
to
Fort
Dix
,
NJ
for
basic
training
, and then
went
on to
advanced
infantry
training
. He also
attended
the
Defense
Language
Institute
in
Monterey
,
Calif
. to
learn
Cantonese
.
McKenna
was
taught
this
language
in
preparation
for
being
sent
into the
Korean
War
as a
translator
.
However
, as the
war
began
to
wind
down
there was not as
high
a
need
for this
position
,
so
he was
instead
sent
to
Berlin
,
Germany
. In
Berlin
, he was in
charge
of the
mail
room
.
McKenna
describes
his
time
in
Berlin
,
including
what
it
was
like
to
work
next
to the
Soviet
sector
of
East
Berlin
as
Cold
War
tensions
were
increasing
. He also
discusses
the
daily
life
of the
soldiers
on
base
including
the
food
,
mail
service
,
entertainment
, and
R
and
R
. He was
discharged
from the
army
on
September
20
,
1954
. He
returned
home
to
Hartford
,
Ct
.
where
he
married
and
started
work
again
within
a
month
of
discharge
.
