Marine
Corps
Reserves
after
September
11th
,
because
he
believed
in the
cause
. He was
activated
in
2006
, and
sent
to
training
at
Twenty-nine
Palms
, in
San
Diego
, for
three
months
of
desert
training
before
being
deployed
to
Fallujah
,
Iraq
.
While
in
Iraq
Ismail’s
unit
was
responsible
for
policing
the
area
and
keeping
the
peace
. He
describes
how the
marines
would
help
the
Iraqi
civilians
and
children
, by
giving
them
supplies
and
training
.
However
, the
children
still
called
them the
“boogie-men”
because
they would
go
into
people’s
houses
at
night
,
undetected
to
capture
the
enemy
. There were
11
casualties
, and
countless
wounded
in
Ismail’s
unit
,
due
to
sniper
fire
, and
tactics
like
car-bombings
.
After
six
and
half
months
in
Fallujah
,
Ismail
was
sent
back
to the
United
States
,
where
he was
sent
to
San
Diego
for
demobilization
. He
arrived
back
in
Connecticut
in
November
of
2006
and
returned
to
CCSU
to
finish
his
education
on the
G.I
.
Bill
.
Ismail
describes
the
influence
that his
service
has had on his
thinking
about
war
. As of the
date
of the
interview
he was
still
a
member
of the
Marine
Corps
reserves
.
