Thomas
Spada
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1950
. He had
moved
to
Winsted
,
Ct
from
Italy
just
two
years
earlier
. He
went
to
four
months
of
basic
training
at
Fort
Dix
,
NJ
before
going
to
Seattle
,
Washington
where
he was
shipped
over
to
Korea
. He was
part
of the
25th
Infantry
Division
, and
worked
in the
Headquarters
section
,
where
he was in
charge
of
making
signs
for
all
of the
units
, and
sometimes
surveying
the
land
.
Since
much
of his
unit
was on the
front
lines
of the
war
, in
places
like
Inchon
and
Panmunjom
, his
unit
moved
around
often
, and
never
lived
in any
kind
of
permanent
building
. His
unit
was also
paired
with a
Turkish
infantry
division
,
which
Spada
describes
during
the
interview
.
Spada
also
describes
daily
life
in
Korea
including
the
food
, what the
soldiers
did
for
entertainment
, and the
close
friendships
he
made
. He was
discharged
from the
army
in
1953
and he
returned
home
to
Winsted
,
Ct
.
