.

.
Robert
P
.
Nadeau
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
just
after
his
18th

, and was
inducted
on

.
15
,
1943
. At the
time
he was
living
in
Van
Buren
,
Maine
. He
went
to
Camp
Wheeler
,
GA
for
basic
training
, and
trained
to be in the
infantry
. In
November
of
1944
, he was
shipped
over
to
England
as
part
of the
69th
Infantry
Division
,
however
,
when
he
arrived
he was
sent
in as a
replacement
for the
84th
Infantry
Division
instead
. The
day
after
he
arrived
in
Belgium
to
become
part

, they
became
engaged
in

Battle
of the
Bulge
.
Nadeau’s
unit
had
lost
many
soldiers
, and was
consistently
replenished
with
replacements
,
which
is
why
Nadeau
said
that he
did
not
make
any
close
friends
during
that
time
. A
particularly
memorable
event
for
Nadeau
was
when
he and his
assistant
captured
39
German
soldiers
almost
by
accident
. He also
talks
about
the
daily
life
of an
infantryman
, the
food
,
entertainment
, and how he
kept
in
touch
with his
family
.
After
the
fighting
was
over
,
Nadeau
was
transferred
to
France
,
where
he
did
clerical
work
until
his
discharge
. He was
discharged
from
Fort
Dix
,
NJ
and
returned
to
Maine
.
Shortly
after
his
discharge
, he
began
work
in
construction
which
he
did
for the
remainder
of his
career
. He also
joined
the
American
Legion
, of
which
he has been a
member
for
over
50
years
.
