Stanley
Kaufman
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
in
1942
at the
age
of
19
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Fort
Monmouth
,
NJ
for
six
months
, at
which
time
he also
went
to
school
to
learn
radio
equipment
repair
for the
signal
corps
. He was then
sent
to
Tennessee
for
maneuvers
,
before
being
transferred
to
New
Orleans
. In
New
Orleans
, he
learned
to
repair
and
maintain
aircraft
equipment
. He was then
transferred
to
Mobile
,
Ala
.
where
he
became
a
member
of the
U.S
.
Army
Air
Corps
. As
part
of the
Air
corps
,
Kaufman
was
part
of a
specialized
aircraft
repair
unit
. This
unit
was
part
of
Operation
Ivory
Soap
, an
operation
where
aircraft
repair
was
entirely
housed
on
converted
liberty
ships
. Their
purpose
was to
assist
in
setting
up
air
strips
on
islands
in the
Pacific
that were
recently
won
from the
Japanese
. Their
first
assignment
was on the
island
of
Saipan
. Their
next
assignment
was in
Iwo
Jima
,
where
they
anchored
in
just
a
few
weeks
after
the
battle
had
started
. The
ship
was
under
fire
on a
routine
basis
, but
Kaufman
notes
how
lucky
they were on the
ship
despite
the
attacks
. The
men
in the
aircraft
repair
unit
stayed
on
board
for
13
months
,
before
setting
up
on
Iwo
Jima
after
the
atomic
bomb
was
dropped
.
Kaufman
returned
home
, and was
discharged
in
January
of
1946
.
When
he
arrived
home
, he
got
a
job
as a
radio
repairman
for
G
.
Fox
,
because
of the
experience
he
received
in the
army
, and
married
the
girl
that he
wrote
letters
to
daily
while
in the
Pacific
.
