when
she
met
her
husband
of
over
sixty
years
,
Stanley
Symonds
. He was a
member
of the
41st
Signal
Company
of the
U.S
.
Army
, and was
stationed
in
Rockhampton
for
training
in
1942
. He had been
invited
to her
house
by her
older
sister
, and
soon
their
relationship
blossomed
.
When
Stan
was
sent
to
New
Guinea
for
duty
, she
wrote
him
almost
every
day
.
When
he
arrived
back
in
Australia
on
leave
, he
asked
Thelma
to
marry
, and they were
wed
on
January
1
,
1944
.
Thelma
talks
about
how the
war
affected
life
back
home
, for
example
the
rationing
of
items
and the
frequent
air
raids
. She
obtained
passage
to the
United
States
in
August
of
1945
, and
met
her
husband
back
in
Connecticut
. They
bought
a
house
with
help
from the
G.I
.
Bill
and
Thelma
worked
as a
stenographer
and
bookkeeper
.
