enlisted
in the
United
States
Marine
Corps
in
1942
. He had
wanted
to be a
marine
since
childhood
. He
went
to
Parris
Island
for his
basic
training
,
which
he
described
as
very
difficult
. He was then
transferred
to
Camp
Lejeune
for
infantry
training
, but
instead
he was
chosen
to
become
part
of the
glider
unit
, and was
sent
to
Texas
for
training
. In
Texas
, the
unit
was
disbanded
, and
Palombizio
was
sent
to
Cherry
Point
,
NC
where
the
VMF
323
Marine
Fighter
Squadron
, also
known
as the
“Death
Rattlers”
was
formed
. He
explains
how the
squadron
obtained
their
nickname
, and also
tells
a
story
about
Charles
Lindberg
landing
a
plane
in
Cherry
Point
.
Palombizio
was
trained
as a
mechanic
for
airplanes
, and the
squadron
was
sent
overseas
after
being
shipped
,
via
air
craft
carrier
to
Oahu
,
HI
.
Shortly
after
their
arrival
in the
South
Pacific
, the
Death
Rattlers
flew
in the
Battle
of
Okinawa
. The
squadron
stayed
on in
Okinawa
after
the
battle
, and they were
stationed
out
of
Kadena
Air
Field
.
Palombizio
stayed
there as
part
of the
squadron
until
his
discharge
in
late
1945
,
after
the
war
was
declared
over
.
After
his
discharge
, he
returned
home
to
Connecticut
where
he
attended
college
and
worked
for a
lumber
company
out
of
East
Hartford
until
his
retirement
.
