Title	Oral history interview with John T.W. Lawrence recorded 2008 Feb. 8
Description	Interview conducted by Jane Natoli. John T.W. Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 1944 just after his eighteenth birthday. He went to basic training in Camp Blanding (Fla.), and was trained as a replacement infantryman. Lawrence was sent overseas on March 1, 1945 and arrived in Liverpool, England on the 8th. He was then sent to France as a replacement rifleman in the 8th Infantry Division. He describes his first combat experience, and his reactions to casualties. Lawrence tells about the daily life of the infantryman, what they experienced and how they lived. After the war was over, and his combat duty had ended, Lawrence enlisted for an additional 18 months, at which time he was part of the occupation of Germany and Berlin that followed World War II. He was discharged from the army in the Spring of 1947, and went on to college, obtaining both a bachelors and masters degree, using the G.I. Bill. He also joined the Massachusetts National Guard for a period of 5 years. He was medically discharged in the Spring of 1952 after being crushed by a tank during training exercises.
