enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
in
September
of
1944
just
after
his
eighteenth
birthday
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Camp
Blanding
(Fla.)
, and was
trained
as a
replacement
infantryman
.
Lawrence
was
sent
overseas
on
March
1
,
1945
and
arrived
in
Liverpool
,
England
on the
8th
. He was then
sent
to
France
as a
replacement
rifleman
in the
8th
Infantry
Division
. He
describes
his
first
combat
experience
, and his
reactions
to
casualties
.
Lawrence
tells
about
the
daily
life
of the
infantryman
, what they
experienced
and how they
lived
.
After
the
war
was
over
, and his
combat
duty
had
ended
,
Lawrence
enlisted
for an
additional
18
months
, at
which
time
he was
part
of the
occupation
of
Germany
and
Berlin
that
followed
World
War
II
. He was
discharged
from the
army
in the
Spring
of
1947
, and
went
on to
college
,
obtaining
both
a
bachelors
and
masters
degree
,
using
the
G.I
.
Bill
. He also
joined
the
Massachusetts
National
Guard
for a
period
of
5
years
. He was
medically
discharged
in the
Spring
of
1952
after
being
crushed
by a
tank
during
training
exercises
.
