Christie
grew
up
in
Wisconsin
and
joined
the
Red
Cross
to
work
in
Vietnam
. She
describes
herself
as
naïve
at the
time
and
unaware
of the
full
extent
of what was
happening
in the
war
. Her
job
with the
Red
Cross
was with the
Supplemental
Recreational
Activities
Overseas
(SRAO)
.
Christie
describes
the
job
as
very
difficult
although
it
was
based
on a
simple
premise
. Their
job
was to
make
the
soldiers
forget
about
death
and
dying
,
even
if
it
was
just
for a
short
time
, and by any
means
they
could
. She
recalls
being
very
silly
,
playing
games
, and
even
having
bubble
blowing
contests
, as the
most
important
aspect
of their
work
was to
make
the
soldiers
laugh
. She was in
Vietnam
as a "
doughnut
dolly
" for
just
over
a
year
, and
when
she
returned
to the
United
States
she
went
to
graduate
school
for
Art
Education
,
before
returning
to
service
as
part
of the
USO
in
Guam
.
