Description
Interview
conducted
by
Cynthia
Tremaglio
.
Vincent
F
.
Tremaglio
was
commissioned
by the
U.S
.
Navy
in
April
of
1966
. He was in his
first
year
of
residency
at a
hospital
in
New
York
City
at the
time
.
Because
he was
commissioned
as a
lieutenant
and a
medical
officer
, he
did
not
attend
the
same
kind
of
basic
training
as
other
sailors
.
Instead
he had a
combined
10
weeks
of
training
in
medical
areas
,
preparing
him for the
war
in
Vietnam
. He was
stationed
in
Chu
Lai
(about
30
miles
south
of
Danang)
as a
medical
officer
in
MCB
40
, a
navy
construction
battalion
. In
addition
to his
duties
in
Chu
Lai
, he also
participated
in the
Civic
Action
Program
,
where
doctors
would
go
to
civilian
towns
, and
treat
the
ailments
of the
sick
, or
provide
them with
vaccinations
.
Although
, he was not in a
combat
unit
,
Tremaglio
saw
many
wounded
soldiers
, and
mortar
fire
was a
nightly
occurrence
.
Tremaglio
was
discharged
in
April
of
1968
, and he was
surprised
upon
his
arrival
in the
States
at the
resentment
toward
the
war
. He
finished
his
medical
residency
at
Waterbury
Hospital
, and then
went
on to
become
a
surgeon
at
Hartford
Hospital
.
