enlisted
in the
United
States
Army
Air
Corps
in
July
of
1942
upon
graduating
from
high
school
.
Although
he
originally
wanted
to
join
the
U.S
.
Navy
, he
notes
that
it
was a
positive
move
for him to
enter
the
Army
,
because
he
made
a
career
out
of
it
. He
attended
basic
training
in
Miami
Beach
,
FL
. From there, he
went
to
other
various
training
facilities
throughout
the
United
States
until
shipping
to
Liverpool
,
England
in
May
of
1943
. There he was
assigned
to the
1st
air
division
,
8th
air
force
,
305th
bomb
group
,
422nd
squadron
.
Kelley
maintained
the
air
craft
for the
most
part
and
did
not
actually
ride
in an
airplane
until
after
he
arrived
in
England
. He
decided
to
make
the
Air
Force
his
career
, and in
1951
, he also
went
to
Korea
,
where
he was
communications
chief
in the
315th
air
division
. He was
discharged
in
1963
with the
rank
of
Senior
Master
Sergeant
(E8)
. He
returned
home
and
worked
for the
Metropolitan
Transport
Authority
in
Boston
,
MA
,
where
he was a
special
investigator
for the
general
manager
.
