immigrated
at the
age
of
17
to the
U.S
.
after
the
1956
Hungarian
Revolution
was
suppressed
by the
Soviet
Army
. He
reports
being
active
in the
armed
resistance
to the
Soviet
invasion
. He
escaped
by
walking
across
Western
Hungary
and
crossing
into
Austria
. He was
drafted
from
West
Hartford
,
CT
and
inducted
in
April
1962
.
Basic
training
was at
Ft
.
Dix
(NJ)
.
AIT
was in
infantry
school
at
Ft
.
Dix
. He
trained
with
light
weapons
and
crew
served
weapons
. He
assisted
with
instruction
for
Soviet
Bloc
weapons
,
which
he had
used
in the
resistance
forces.
. In the
Fall
of
1962
,
Czunas
was
assigned
to
ROK
,
7th
Division
,
Camp
Casey
on the
DMZ
. He
participated
in
night
patrols
,
assisted
in the
capture
of a
group
of
North
Korean
infiltrators
. In
1963
, was
detailed
for
TDY
for the
7th
Division
Soccer
team
and
became
the
highest
goal
scorer
for
team
.
Czunas
was also
assigned
as
driver
and
radio
operator
for the
CO
. He
participated
in
base
demolition
unit
during
alert
for
Cuban
Missile
crisis
. In the
Fall
of
1963
,
Czunas
was
assigned
to
Ft
.
Hood
(TX)
as
driver
for
Lt
.
Col
.
George
Patton
,
Jr
. He was
discharged
in
April
1964
from
Ft
.
Hood
and
returned
to
Connecticut
.
