Donovan
lived
in the
Frog
Hollow
neighborhood
of
Hartford
,
CT
when
he
decided
to
join
the
military
. He
joined
the
Coast
Guard
and
went
to
Sheepshead
Bay
,
NY
for
basic
training
.
After
graduating
from the
Coast
Guard
Academy
, he
went
to
Guantanamo
Bay
,
Cuba
to
train
on
battleships
. He
sailed
on the
USCG
Mendota
, and the
USS
General
Richardson
. His
main
duties
while
in the
Coast
Guard
were to
protect
the
borders
of the
United
States
along
the
east
coast
from
German
submarines
, and from the
infiltration
of
German
spies
. They were also
responsible
for
civilian
rescues
. He also
applied
for
sea
duty
,
which
entailed
sailing
in
convoys
to
bring
soldiers
to
Europe
.
During
these
troop
transports
,
Donovan
worked
as a
cook
. He was
discharged
in
February
of
1946
, and
returned
to
Connecticut
where
he
became
a
police
officer
with the
Hartford
Police
Department
. He also
joined
the
VFW
post
that the
police
department
had
established
. He has been a
member
for
over
50
years
,
serving
as
both
commander
and
district
commander
at
different
times
.
