Title	Oral history interview with John J. Donovan recorded 2006 Nov. 24
Description	Interview conducted by Brett Bloom. John J. Donovan lived in the Frog Hollow neighborhood of Hartford, CT when he decided to join the military. He joined the Coast Guard and went to Sheepshead Bay, NY for basic training. After graduating from the Coast Guard Academy, he went to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to train on battleships. He sailed on the USCG Mendota, and the USS General Richardson. His main duties while in the Coast Guard were to protect the borders of the United States along the east coast from German submarines, and from the infiltration of German spies. They were also responsible for civilian rescues. He also applied for sea duty, which entailed sailing in convoys to bring soldiers to Europe. During these troop transports, Donovan worked as a cook. He was discharged in February of 1946, and returned to Connecticut where he became a police officer with the Hartford Police Department. He also joined the VFW post that the police department had established. He has been a member for over 50 years, serving as both commander and district commander at different times.
