Katz
was
commissioned
into the
U.S
.
Army
through
the
reserves
program
in
1940
.
After
the
attack
on
Pearl
Harbor
, he was
ordered
to
attend
training
in
Fort
Benning
,
Ga
. He
completed
infantry
training
and then
went
on for an
additional
six
weeks
of
training
with the
parachute
infantry
. From there he was
sent
to
England
with the
503rd
parachute
infantry
as a
replacement
battalion
.
Katz's
unit
prepared
for the
invasion
of
North
Africa
;
however
, they
ended
up
arriving
in
Iran
by
train
. His
battalion
then
went
to
Italy
, and by
October
of
1943
they were
involved
in
combat
near
Naples
. His
unit
was
attached
to the
82nd
airborne
division
, and they
went
on to be
part
of the
Anzio
invasion
and the
Battle
of the
Bulge
.
When
the
Germans
finally
surrendered
, the
82nd
airborne
division
liberated
Wobbelin
concentration
camp
,
which
was a
starvation
camp
outside
of
Ludwigslust
,
Germany
.
Katz
was
sent
home
in
early
1946
, but he
remained
in the
reserves
. He
went
on to
use
the
G.I
.
Bill
to
attend
law
school
, but he
still
took
assignments
with the
reserves
between
semesters
.
After
graduation
from
law
school
he
accepted
a
position
with the
Civil
Affairs
Unit
,
where
he
stayed
for
17
years
. He was
promoted
to
Colonel
and
served
at the
Pentagon
.
Katz
kept
in
close
touch
with
many
from his
unit
,
attending
reunions
of the
82nd
Airborne
Division
Association
.
