Description
Interview
conducted
by

Devin
.
Francis
Long
enlisted
in the
United
States
Navy
in
1943
. He
went
to
Newport
,
RI
for
basic
training
, and then was
transferred
to
Norfolk
,
VA
,
while
his
crew
waited
for their
ship
to be
finished
.
Long
describes
this as a
boring
time
for the
sailors
. They would
perform
some
training
activities
, but not
much
else
.
Long's
crew
shipped
to the
Pacific
Theatre
via
Hawaii
. They
encountered
many
naval
battles
in the
Pacific
, and in
one
battle
, their
ship
was
bombed
, and
suffered
a
great
deal
of
damage
,
along
with the
loss
of
almost
300
soldiers
.
Due
to the
damage
on the
ship
, they had to
sail
back
to
Hawaii
for
repairs
.
When
the
ships
repairs
were
completed
they
sailed
for
Japan
, and
when
the
shore
was in
sight
,
it
was
announced
that the
Atomic
bomb
had been
dropped
and the
fighting
was
over
.
Long
also
describes
listening
to
Tokyo
Rose's
broadcasts
during
their
time
in the
Pacific
,
returning
Italian
prisoners
of
war
to
Italy
after
the
war
was
over
, and the
cost
and
rationing
of
items
during
the
war
.
