Title	Oral history interview with Shawn J. Curreri recorded 2005 Dec. 7
Description	Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Shawn Curreri enlisted in Air National Guard on Dec. 7, 2000 because of the education benefits and job experience that the Air Force had to offer. He committed to six years, and at the time of the interview Curreri still had one year remaining in his service. His basic training was completed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and lasted for six and a half weeks. The week before his graduation from basic training, the September 11th terrorist attacks happened. Curreri describes what it was like to be on a military base during this time. Due to the attacks Curreri was activated shortly after his graduation from basic training. He worked at Bradley Field in East Granby, CT until he was deployed to the United Arab Emirates for a period of three months. He describes this deployment as "resort-like" because of the amenities at the base. He returned to Bradley Field until the war in Iraq began, and he again deployed, to an undisclosed location, in January of 2003. Curreri describes this base as the opposite of the base in the United Arab Emirates. The airmen stayed in a warehouse that was wall to wall cots, and they ate mostly MRE's because the other food was inedible. When Curreri's deployment was over, he was sent back to Bradley Field where he stayed until he was deactivated in June of 2003. After his deactivation, he began taking classes full time at CCSU, where he was eligible for a tuition waiver because of his service. At the time of this interview he was expecting to graduate in May of 2006. He also joined the Veterans Appreciation Organization on Campus, and became its president. The organization sponsors many events on and off campus, including the proposal of a veterans memorial, and sending care packages to soldiers that are overseas.
