Oral
history
interview
with
Louis
A.
Bianco
on
2005
Dec
.
11
Description
Interview
conducted
by
Arianne
Salcito
.
Louis
A.
Bianco
was
drafted
on his
18th
birthday
, and
travelled
to
New
Haven
, with
some
friends
from
Waterbury
, to
undergo
tests
and a
physical
. He was
able
to
join
the
U.S
.
Navy
, and in
January
of
1944
,
Bianco
travelled
to
Sampson
,
NY
for
boot
camp
.
After
basic
training
, and a
short
period
of
leave
,
Bianco
was
sent
to
Norfolk
,
VA
for
Destroyer
Training
School
. In
July
of
1944
, the
sailors
in
Virginia
were
made
part
of the
crew
of a
new
ship
.
After
coming
aboard
the
ship
in
July
, they
did
an
additional
4-5
months
of
training
with the
356
member
crew
. The
ship
then
headed
to the
Pacific
Theatre
.
Bianco's
assignments
while
on
board
the
ship
were as a "
look-out
", and as a
baker
in the
kitchen
. The
ship
moved
around
most
of the
time
, and the
crew
was
part
of
skirmishes
in the
Philippines
,
Okinawa
,
Iwo
Jima
, and the
South
China
Sea
,
among
other
places
.
When
the
war
ended
, the
ship
that
Bianco
served
on
became
a
part
of the
mail
service
,
taking
mail
from
Sasabo
,
Japan
to
places
throughout
the
South
China
Sea
.
It
was in
late
1945
,
when
the
ship
headed
back
to the
United
States
,
going
through
the
Panama
Canal
, and
finally
landing
in
Brooklyn
,
NY
.
Bianco
was
discharged
in
late
April
of
1946
, and
began
college
the
following
fall
with the
G.I
.
Bill
. He
wished
to have a
career
in
civil
service
, and
went
to
work
for the
Postal
Service
,
where
he
stayed
for
39
years
.
Bianco
noted
that the
best
thing
about
being
in the
military
was
meeting
people
, and
making
new
friends
,
many
of
which
he
kept
in
touch
with
after
the
war
.
