William
Gresh
was
drafted
just
after
his
graduation
from
high
school
in
1943
. He
volunteered
for the
U.S
.
Navy
, and was
soon
on his
way
to
Sampson
,
NY
for
boot
camp
.
After
a
short
leave
,
Gresh
again
went
to
Sampson
for
signal
training
(where
he
learned
how to
signal
Morse
code
with
lights
among
other
things)
, and was
promoted
to
Seaman
1st
class
. By
October
of
1943
,
Gresh
was
transferred
to the
Solomons
Island
(MD)
for
amphibious
landing
training
, and
it
was at this
time
that he
became
a
soldier
in the
Army
, as
well
as the
Navy
.
It
was at
Fort
Pickett
(VA)
that he was
one
of
only
100
soldiers
authorized
to
wear
both
the
army
and
navy
uniforms
. In
January
of
1944
,
Gresh's
unit
,
JASCO
,
travelled
to
Hawaii
and then
across
the
ocean
to
Manus
,
Leyte
Gulf
, and
Luzon
,
where
he
witnessed
kamikaze
pilots
,
which
attacked
in the
morning
and at
dusk
.
When
the
war
ended
,
Gresh
was
sent
back
to the
United
States
and he was
discharged
after
2
years
,
11
months
, and
10
days
. He
returned
to
Unionville
,
CT
, and
went
to
work
at
Ensign-Bickford
in
Simsbury
,
CT
. He
joined
the
Avon
VFW
,
where
he was
post
commander
in
1967
.
