Macon
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
at the
age
of
19
. He
went
to
Camp
Upton
in
Long
Island
,
NY
for
basic
training
. From there he was
shipped
to
California
, and then
Manila
. He
worked
for the
Quartermaster
Corps
, and was in
charge
of
trucking
supplies
,
such
as
food
and
clothing
, to the
troops
in the
Philippines
. The
U.S
.
Army
was
mostly
segregated
at the
time
,
therefore
Macon's
unit
was
entirely
African
American
with a
white
commanding
officer
.
Macon
had a
variety
of
experiences
while
in the
army
,
including
seeking
the
Army's
permission
to
marry
a
Phillippine
woman
,
having
the
truck
he was
driving
bombed
by the
Japanese
, and
training
a
champion
army
boxer
.
Macon
was
discharged
in
February
of
1946
and
went
to
New
York
City
,
where
he
lived
for a
time
. He also
lived
in
Washington
,
D.C
.
before
moving
to
Connecticut
.
