Ferguson
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
at the
age
of
21
.
Originally
drafted
for
18
months
, he
later
found
that his
draft
period
had been
extended
and he would
remain
in the
service
for an
additional
4
months
. He
attended
basic
training
at
Fort
Hood
,
Texas
and then
later
was
transferred
to
Camp
Chafee
,
Arkansas
.
It
was in
Arkansas
that
Ferguson
was
almost
discharged
from the
Army
because
of an
extreme
allergy
to
Poison
Oak
.
However
,
after
discovering
that there was
no
Poison
Oak
in
Korea
, the
army
decided
to
keep
him in the
service
. From
Arkansas
, he
went
to
Korea
where
he
ran
the
wires
needed
for
communication
. He was
discharged
in
1953
and
returned
to
Connecticut
.
Ferguson
said
the
events
he
witnessed
in
Korea
negatively
impacted
his
life
after
he was
discharged
.
When
he
returned
home
he
went
back
to
school
with the
help
of the
G.I
.
bill
, and
subsequently
worked
for
AT&T
for a
number
of
years
.
