Smith
enlisted
in the
United
States
Marine
Corps
in
1966
after
a
semester
of
college
. He
joined
for a
variety
of
reasons
.
Smith
had his
basic
training
on
Parris
Island
(SC)
which
he
vividly
remembers
and
describes
in
detail
. He
continued
with
training
at
Camp
Lejeune
(NC)
, and then
attended
Radio
Telegraph
School
in
San
Diego
(CA)
before
being
transferred
to
Vietnam
.
Smith
inadvertently
volunteered
for
reconnaissance
duty
in
Khe
Sahn
in the
northern
part
of
Vietnam
,
where
he was a
radio
operator
for a
patrol
group
that would
go
out
on
5-7
day
patrols
looking
for
probable
NVA
. He then
transferred
to a
stationary
tower
in
Khe
Sahn
where
he
performed
many
of the
same
radio
operator
duties
.
After
3
months
manning
the
tower
, he
once
again
began
reconnaissance
patrols
in
Quang
Tri
.
Smith
describes
the
conditions
in
which
the
marines
lived
as
well
as their
day-to-day
activities
. He also
describes
the
sense
of
brotherhood
that he and the
other
marines
in his
battalion
shared
.
Smith
returned
to the
United
States
in
1969
,
where
he
worked
at
Camp
Lejeune
for
7
months
before
being
discharged
.
After
leaving
the
Marines
,
Smith
returned
to
college
,
earning
a
B.A
. in
English
.
