on
June

,
2004
.
Edward
Gilbert
,
originally
from
Wethersfield
(CT)
, was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
June
of
1942
. He was
inducted
into
service
in
Fort
Devens
(MA)
, and then
completed
his
basic
training
at
Fort
Bragg
(NC)
" From there he was
sent
to
Fort
Edwards
(MA)
where
the
2nd
Brigade
was
formed
with a
new
purpose
, they were to
learn
to
operate
amphibious
landing
crafts
.
Gilbert
was
designated
the
driver(coxswain)
of the
craft
and was
given
a
crew
of
3
men
.
Training
for the
LCDP
boats
was
completed
in
Cairns
,
Aus
.
where
the
boats
were
constructed
. The
crew
of the
boat
was
responsible
for
getting
infantry
and
supplies
from
larger
boats
to the
islands
in the
South
Pacific
, and then
later
relocating
people
from
one
island
to
another.
.
Gilbert's
missions
included
travelling
along
the
coast
of
New
Guinea
(where
he
contracted
malaria)
,
islands
in the
Philippines
, and
special
missions
to
Romblon
Island
. The
largest
battle
that his
crew
took
part
in was the
Battle
at
Leyte
Gulf
,
where
they were
responsible
for
making
sure
thousands
of
soldiers
, from
both
the
Army
and
Navy
,
arrived
on the
shores
of
Leyte
. This was
very
difficult
for the
small
boats
because
of the
Japanese
kamikaze
attacks
.
Gilbert
was
sent
home
in
June
of
1945
, and
while
he was
initially
supposed
to
return
to the
South
Pacific
, the
war
ended
and he was
discharged
instead
. He
stayed
in
touch
with his
unit
through
yearly
reunions
, and
joined
the
American
Legion
,
where
he has been an
active
member
for
more
than
55
years
.
