William
A.
O'Neill
enlisted
in the
Air
Force
in
September
of
1950.
He
wanted
to
fight
in the
Korean
War
as a
pilot.
He was
unable
to
train
as a
pilot
, and
instead
trained
to be an
aerial
gunner.
The
majority
of his
basic
training
was
completed
at
Sheppard
Field
in
Wichita
Falls
,
Texas.
O'Neill's
gunnery
training
took
place
at
Lowry
Field
in
Denver
,
CO.
From there he was
assigned
to a
B-29
crew
at
Randolph
Airbase.
At this
time
he was also
promoted
to
sergeant.
In
February
of
1953
,
O'Neill's
crew
was
stationed
at the
Kadena
Air
Force
base
in
Okinawa
,
Japan
,
where
they
flew
12
missions
over
North
Korea.
The
missions
would
last
for
10-12
hours
each
, and were
only
flown
at
night
in the
cover
of
darkness.
After
12
missions
the
war
ended
and
O'Neill
was
sent
back
to the
United
States
where
he was
discharged
in
Roswell
,
New
Mexico.
From there he
returned
home
to
East
Hampton
,
CT
in
December
of
1953.
After
the
war
O'Neill
became
a
member
of
both
the
American
Legion
and the
VFW.
O'Neill
also
served
as
Vice
President
of the
New
England
Air
Museum
,
after
his
term
as
governor
,
where
he
once
again
had
occasion
to
view
a
B-29
airplane.
