Title
Oral
history
interview
with
Rose
Delmonico
Murphy
recorded
2006
May
11
Description
Rose
Murphy
began
her
career
as a
nurse
at
Yale
University
Hospital
.
After
Pearl
Harbor
was
bombed
and
WWII
began
, she was
called
into
active
duty
as an
army
nurse
in the
Southern
Pacific
. She
received
her
basic
training
in
California
,
which
lasted
about
3-4
weeks
,
which
she
described
as
very
difficult
, as they were
required
to
do
all
of the
same
training
as the
male
soldiers
.
Murphy
was then
shipped
to
New
Zealand
while
her
unit
awaited
the
construction
of a
new
hospital
on the
island
of
Saipan
.
Murphy's
unit
stayed
in
New
Zealand
for
about
a
year
,
where
it
was
very
beautiful
, but there
wasn't
much
work
.
Nurses
mostly
attended
to
soldiers
that had
contracted
malaria
.
Murphy
would have
preferred
to
attend
to
wounded
soldiers
, and
inadvertently
told
General
McArthur
this in a
chance
meeting
on the
base
in
New
Zealand
.
Murphy's
unit
,
which
consisted
mostly
of
doctors
and
nurses
from the
Connecticut
area
, was then
transferred
to the
island
of
Saipan
,
where
she was
promoted
to
Captain
.
Murphy
said
that the
conditions
in
Saipan
were
much
more
rigid
and
difficult
than in
New
Zealand
. They were
without
indoor
plumbing
,
it
was
oppressively
hot
, and the
ratio
of
doctors
and
nurses
to
patients
was
much
lower
there.
After
two
years
the
war
was
over
and
most
of her
unit
was
sent
home
. They were
discharged
in
California
, and then
bussed
home
to
Connecticut
,
where
there was
no
reception
for their
homecoming
,
which
upset
the
returning
nurses
.
Murphy
became
a
nurse
for the
phone
company
when
she
arrived
home
, and then
later
on for
Connecticut
Hard
Rubber
.
After
the
war
she
joined
the
American
Legion
,
49th
unit
, and
kept
in
touch
with
most
of the
people
whom
she
worked
with
overseas
through
a
reunion
that they
held
once
a
year
.
Interview
conducted
by
Eileen
Hurst
.
