McKone
was
drafted
in
1968.
After
testing
he
accepted
the
option
to
enlist
in the
Regular
Army
in
order
to
qualify
for
OCS.
Basic
training
was at
Ft
Jackson
(SC).
AIT
was in
engineering
at
Ft
Leonard
Wood
(MO).
He was
subsequently
commissioned
as
2nd
Lt
after
23
weeks
of
OCS
training
in
Virginia.
He was
trained
in
logistics
and
supply
at
Ft.
Lee
(VA).
McKone
received
orders
for
Germany
for a
3-
year
assignment.
He
served
as a
supply
officer
and then as a
1st
Lt
company
commander
in
23rd
Engineering
Battalion.
His
unit
supported
armor
training.
" On
completion
of his
tour
in
Germany
, he
received
orders
for
Vietnam.
He
arrived
in
October
1972
and was
assigned
as
Company
Commander
for
support
company
for
MAC-V
HQ..
He
served
in this
post
until
in
April
1973
after
peace
accords
were
signed.
His
unit
prepared
facilities
for the
Vietcong
and
North
Vietnamese
Army.
He
participated
in
sweeps
in and
around
Saigon
to
locate
US
personnel
and
relatives.
McKone
shipped
out
on the
last
plane
to
leave
Tan
Son
Nhut
Air
Base.
He was
assigned
to a
base
in
Missouri
but
later
resigned
his
commission
in
response
to a
reduction
in
force
program.
McKone
was
discharged
in
July
1973..
