Inman
enlisted
in the
Marine
Corps
February
1943
at
age
17
and was
assigned
to
Parris
Island
,
NC
for
basic
training
(Boot
Camp)
.
Advanced
training
assignment
was
Naval
Aviation
school
(NAACP)
,
Memphis
,
TN
,
where
he
trained
as an
aviation
mechanic
for the
Marine
Air
Corps
bombers
. He was
subsequently
assigned
to
VMBG
613
, a
marine
bomber
group
. His
aerial
gunnery
training
was in
Oklahoma
. The
Group's
initial
assignment
was to
Edenton
,
NC
. The
Group
flew
coastal
patrols
along
the
outer
banks
.
It
flew
to
Arkansas
for
flight
training
.
Inman
served
as a
mechanic
and
tail
gunner
for
PBJ's
, the
Marine
version
of the
B-25
.
Planes
were
flown
to
Hawaii
and
crew
members
were
transferred
to
San
Diego
where
they were
shipped
out
on a
troop
ship
. He
flew
from
Hawaii
to the
Kwajalien
Atoll
air
strip
,
arriving
in
December
1944
. He
remained
there for
approximately
18
months
. The
unit
flew
submarine
and
island
patrols
approximately
2
times
per
week
.
Inman
recalled
losing
one
plane
and
one
unit
member
in the
bombing
attack
on
Pohnpei
Island
. The
airstrip
served
as
stopover
for
B-29s
and
other
planes
that were
being
ferried
west
for the
Pacific
campaign
.
After
VJ
day
,
equipment
and
planes
were
bulldozed
into the
ocean
.
Personnel
were
taken
off
by
ship
.
Inman
was
processed
through
San
Francisco
and he
traveled
by
train
to
Cherry
Point
,
NC
for
discharge
.
After
discharge
, he
returned
home
(Massachusetts)
to
complete
High
School
and
later
enrolled
in
Bates
College
under
the
GI
Bill
and
obtained
a
degree
in
biology
.
