Title	Oral history interview with Nicholas J. Lavnikevich, recorded 2004 Jan. 30
Description	Lavnikevich enlisted in the Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor. He was a Registered Nurse and was immediately assigned to a clinic at the Chelsea Naval Hospital with the rank of Chief Pharmacist Mate.. He was then assigned to the "Surge", YP417, a trawler converted for submarine patrolling. The ship cruised along the East Coast to Cuba and then to the Panama Canal.. The ship was assigned to escort duty for a convoy to Bora Bora in the Tahiti group and then to Guadalcanal in the Solomon's. The ship went on patrols between Guadalcanal and Tulaghi for six (6) and nine (9) months. The ship's duties included providing refueling for PT boat squadrons.. He was transferred back to the US via the New Hebrides to Hawaii. En route he was assigned to a group of wounded on a troopship on its way to San Francisco. He traveled via troop train to Boston and was then assigned to the Naval hospital at Key West for a period of nine (9) months.. His final assignment was to the DE-25, USS Wintle at San Francisco. He stayed with the ship until VJ Day. He was then assigned to medical assistance for processing of discharged personnel. He was discharged at Boston in 1945.. After discharge he took a Master's Degree in Public Health under the GI Bill at Harvard Medical School. He is currently active with the VFW in Avon.
