Stupak
enlisted
in the
Army
Air
Corps
shortly
after
Pearl
Harbor
. His
Basic
Training
was at
Jefferson
Barracks
in
MO
.
After
Basic
, he was
assigned
to
Bakersfield
, CA for
aircraft
maintenance
OJT
. He was
subsequently
assigned
to a
support
unit
at
Santa
Ana
AB
, an
Air
Corps
cadet
processing
center
,
where
he
served
as a
mess
Sergeant
for
24
months
while
waiting
for an
assignment
to
gunnery
school.
. He then
got
orders
for
Amarillo
,
TX
for
6
months
of
aircraft
maintenance
training
.
After
training
he was
transferred
to
Kingman
,
AZ
for
gunnery
school
. Then he was
assigned
to a
10
man
B-17
crew
for
training
at
Avon
Park
,
FL.
. The
crew
flew
its
B-17
to
Canada
and then to the
UK
,
arriving
in
July
1944
. The
crew
was
assigned
to a
different
plane
which
was
detailed
to the
94th
Bomb
Group
,
331st
Squadron
of the
8th
Air
Force
stationed
at
Bury
St
.
Edmonds
UK
.
Sgt
.
Stupak
served
as a
fight
engineer
for
17
bombing
missions
from
July
1944
until
his
plane
was
damaged
in a
fighter
action
on
October
7
,
1944
. The
crew
was
forced
to
bail
out
and was
captured
by
German
military
personnel
.
Sgt
.
Stupak
was
shipped
to the
Stalag
Luft
IV
POW
camp
in
Gross
Tychow
Poland
. In
February
1945
the
POW's
from the
camp
were
force
marched
into
Germany
. On the
march
Sgt
Stupak
received
shrapnel
wounds
from
rocket
fire
and was
placed
in a
POW
hospital.
. The
POW
camp
was
liberated
in
April
1945
and
Sgt
Stupak
was
taken
to a
field
hospital
and then to
40th
General
Hospital
,
Paris
,
FR
.
After
treatment
he
shipped
out
from
Le
Havre
to
New
Jersey
and was
discharged
in
October
1945
.
