Oral
history
interview
with
Loretta
Wrobel
recorded
on
2002
Nov
.

Creator
Wrobel, Loretta
Description
Interview
conducted
by
Linda
Campbell
.
Loretta
Wrobel
was a
lesbian
and
feminist
activist
who
was
involved
in the
establishment
of the
Hartford
Women's
Center
, and
continues
to
work
as
feminist
therapist
.
Wrobel
was
born
in
Connecticut
in
1954
.
While
she
didn't
have a
specific
coming
out
experience
she
describes
knowing
since
the
age
of
5
that she would
never
marry
or have
children
.
Wrobel
studied
psychology
as she was
convinced
that she would
eventually
end
up
in an
institution
for
deviant
behavior
because
of her
lesbianism
. She
went
to
UCONN
, and then
later
to
Fordham
University
in
New
York
to
obtain
her
masters
degree
in
social
work
.
It
was in
New
York
that she
first
became
heavily
involved
with the
feminist
movement
.
When
she
returned
to
Connecticut
in the
early
seventies
, she
recognized
the
need
for a
women's
meeting
place
and
support
center
. She
put
an
ad
in the
paper
advertising
a
women's
meeting
group
for
all
women
, not
specifically
for
lesbians
, and
over
fifty
women
showed
up
for the
first
meeting
.
Eventually
the
group
was
given
space
and
funds
for a
feminist
library
were
donated
, and the
Hartford
Womens
Center
was
established
.
Wrobel
also
discusses
the
experiences
of
lesbians
during
the
feminist
movement
and the
accomplishments
that
resulted
.
