Description
Title
Oral
history
interview
with
James
Hanley
recorded
on
2002
Nov
.
5
.
Description
Interview
conducted
by
Jean-Paul
Destruge
.
James
Hanley
grew
up
in
London
,
England
, and
came
to the
United
States
to
attend
college
.
Although
he was
originally
supposed
to
attend
UCLA
film
school
, a
shortage
of
funds
led
him to
attend
Trinity
College
in
Hartford
,
where
he had
received
a
scholarship
. As
it
turned
out
, he
like
the
area
, and has
remained
in
Hartford
for the
most
part
since
1968
.
Hanley
became
involved
in
showing
films
at
Cinestudio
Theatre
, in the
way
that they were
meant
to be
shown
,
during
his
time
at
Trinity
.
Cinestudio
was
seen
as a
radical
theater
at
first
because
they would
show
films
that had
previously
had
little
to
no
exposure
. In
1988
, The
Gay
and
Lesbian
Film
Festival
began
in
Hartford
, and the
films
were
shown
at
Cinestudio
.
Hanley
has been with the
festival
since
its
inception
,
sitting
on the
Committee
that
oversees
its
production
. In its
beginnings
Hanley
had
input
on
almost
all
aspects
of the
festival
due
to his
experience
. In
recent
years
he has
pared
down
his
contribution
to the
more
technical
aspects
of the
festival
,
such
as the
showing
of the
films
and the
logistics
of
holding
the
festival
at
Cinestudio
.
During
the
interview
Hanley
discusses
the
changes
in the
festival
over
the
years
, and how the
Hartford
festival
differs
from
others
across
the
country
.
