Title
Developing
an
Individualized
Student
Mathematics
Program
for
Learners
Based
on
Developmental
and
Cognitive
Levels
of
Functioning
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2007
Resource Type
Special Project
Notes
This
project
focused
on
designing
an
individualized
plan
of
instruction
in
mathematics
. The
participants
in this
project
were
adult
incarcerated
males
between
18
and
52
years
of
age
. These
men
were
enrolled
in an
Adult
Basic
Education
program
functioning
at
grade
equivalencies
of
kindergarten
through
fifth
grade
. To
develop
this
plan
, the
developmental
and
cognitive
levels
of
functioning
of the
individual
needed
to be
determined
. The
developmental
level
was
determined
by
administering
three
Piagetian
tests
:
conservation
of
number
,
conservation
of
length
, and
conservation
of
area
. These
tests
determined
the
capability
for
learning
mathematics
concepts
. A
cognitive
assessment
was
administered
to
determine
the
cognitive
level
of
functioning
. This
test
showed
what the
student
had
already
learned
about
basic
problem
solving
and
mathematical
concepts
. The
results
of the
two
tests
were
analyzed
to
determine
a
plan
of
instruction
for
each
individual
student
. These
students
were
found
to have
basic
deficits
in
understanding
of the
concepts
of
numeration
,
distinguishing
between
different
types
of
problem
solving
operations
, and
utilizing
the
symbolic
mode
in
calculations
. An
instructional
plan
was
developed
to
assist
students
with
attaching
meaning
to
mathematics
problem
solving
.
