Abstract
Following
the
death
of
Francisco
Franco
in
1975
,
Spain's
transition
to
democracy
revived
the
historical
challenge
of
balancing
central
and
regional
power
. In
creating
a
modern
democracy
, the
Spanish
government
had to
take
into
consideration
long-standing
feelings
of
diversity
and
regional
identification
,
which
in the
cases
of its "
Historic
Nationalities
"
involved
the
existence
of
regional
languages
,
unique
economic
structures
and
independent
administrative
bodies
.
However
, the
accusation
of
unfair
treatment
in
favor
of these
regions
brought
about
the
idea
of
granting
equal
autonomy
to
each
newly
created
Autonomous
Community
.
While
this
approach
intended
to
create
a
balance
amongst
the
Autonomous
Communities
, the
continued
disparities
that are
visible
in the
Statues
of
Autonomy
demonstrate
the
profound
influence
of
regional
diversity
in the
structure
of the
modern
Spanish
state
. In
analyzing
the
detailed
list
of
competencies
and
unique
attributes
each
Autonomous
Community
has
included
in its
own
Statute
of
Autonomy
,
it
is
clear
to
see
how
each
region's
unique
character
has
directly
influenced
its
development
as an
autonomous
body
. In
addition
, the
unique
qualities
of
each
Autonomous
Community
can
better
be
contextualized
by
examining
the
historical
trajectory
of
Spain
and its
various
regions
. The
historical
background
of
each
region
has
played
a
pivotal
role
in
determining
the
competencies
both
granted
to and
requested
by the
Autonomous
Communities
;
therefore
only
through
an
in-depth
analysis
of its
history
can
one
fully
understand
the
marked
regional
diversity
that
continues
to
influence
Spanish
politics
and
society
.
