Abstract
The
study
contained
in this
thesis
investigates
the
effects
of
parental
involvement
in
literacy
events
in the
home
on a
child's
reading
motivation
.
Specifically
, are
children
more
likely
to
voluntarily
engage
in
literacy
events
when
parental
support
is
given
at
home
?
Three
mothers
and
three
of their
children
participated
in a
series
of
family
literacy
workshops
. They
interacted
with
various
strategies
presented
in the
workshops
.
Data
collection
consisted
of
parent
and
child
pre
and
post
interviews
,
attitude
surveys
, and
reading
logs
. The
data
was
analyzed
and then
reported
in a
case
by
case
format
.
While
it
was
difficult
to
directly
link
changes
in the
child's
literacy
behavior
to
participation
in the
workshops
,
positive
effects
were
noted
.
Stronger
mother
and
child
relationships
were
formed
,
parental
self-confidence
rose
, and
some
increase
in
reading
among
children
was
observed
.
