Abstract
Dialectical
Behavior
Therapy
is
a
form
of
therapy
originally
used
to
treat
adults
who
were
diagnosed
with
Borderline
Personality
Disorder
.
Literature
on
DBT
has
expanded
and
mental
health
personnel
are
now
using
DBT
to
treat
not
only
adults
but
children
as
well
(Perepletchikova
&
Goodman
,
2014
;
Marchetto
&
Garcia-Palacios
,
2012
;
Groves
et
al
.
2012
;
Fleischaker
et
al.
,
2011)
.
Though
limited
,
early
studies
suggest
the
effectiveness
of
DBT
in
treating
children
who
express
borderline
personality
features
. The
current
study
was
conducted
in
order
to
provide
additional
support
for
DBT
as a
viable
option
in
treating
children
with
severe
mental
health
issues
.
Individuals
in the
study
were
admitted
to the
hospital
and
placed
in
either
an
inpatient
or
partial
hospitalization
settings
and
exposed
to
DBT
based
programming
during
their
stay
.
Participants
were
given
a
pre-test
and
post-test
of the
borderline
personality
features
scale
for
children
(BPFS-C)
in
order
to
determine
the
extent
of
borderline
features
they
express
.
Participants
showed
a
significant
decrease
on
BPFS-C
from
pre-test
to
post-test
. In
addition
,
individuals
with a
diagnosis
of
mood
disorder
showed
a
statistically
significant
decrease
on
scores
when
compared
to
other
diagnoses
.
Individuals
who
came
in with a
principal
problem
of
suicidal
ideation
and
self-injurious
behaviors
showed
a
significant
decrease
on
scores
of
BPFS-C
from
pre-test
to
post-test
,
when
compared
to a
principal
problem
of
aggression
.
Lastly
, there was a
significant
decrease
on
scores
of the
BPFS-C
in
both
children
and
adolescent
age
groups
without
a
significant
main
effect
for
either
age
group
.
