Abstract
Literary
critics
often
compare
Horacio
Quiroga
and
Edgar
Allan
Poe
based
on their
incorporation
of
similar
themes
,
such
as
insanity
,
horror
, and
death
.
Critics
have not
however
compared
the
two
authors
solely
on their
presentation
of the
theme
of
death
in their
short
stories
. The
presentation
of the
theme
of
death
in
each
authors
'
short
stories
reveals
the
unique
abilities
of
each
author
.
Horacio
Quiroga
does
not
simply
imitate
Edgar
Allan
Poe
, but
instead
uses
his
influence
to
create
a
style
of his
own
. In this
analysis
,
I
examine
the
narrator
, the
setting
, and the
imagery
used
in
seven
stories
by
each
author
in
order
to
analyze
the
theme
of
death
.
I
compare
"
Fantasía
Nerviosa
" by
Quiroga
with "The
Tell-Tale
Heart
" by
Poe
, "
El
crimen
del
otro
" by
Quiroga
with "The
Cask
of
Amontillado
" by
Poe
, "
La
llama
" by
Quiroga
with "
Berenice
" by
Poe
, "
El
almohadón
de
plumas
" by
Quiroga
with "
Morella
" by
Poe
, "
El
paso
del
Yabebirí
" by
Quiroga
with "The
Imp
of the
Perverse
" by
Poe
, "
El
hombre
muerto
" by
Quiroga
with "The
Masque
of the
Red
Death
" by
Poe
, and "
El
vampiro
" by
Quiroga
with "The
Facts
in the
Case
of
Mr
.
Valdemar
" by
Poe
.
Each
story
pair
contains
similar
or
contrasting
overall
themes
, but the
theme
of
death
found
in
each
story
is
multifaceted
and
shows
the
uniqueness
of
each
author's
writing
style
.
