Abstract
The
implementation
of
technologies
in the
secondary
education
classroom
has been
increasing
for the
past
25
years
, but
still
,
only
about
40%
of
teachers
report
moderate
or
frequent
use
of
technology
as an
instructional
tool
(Burns
,
2010)
. The
purpose
of this
study
was to
determine
whether
using
mobile
devices
in a
mathematics
classroom
will
improve
students’
performance
on
traditional
assessments
in
Algebra
1
. The
control
group
was
composed
of
20
students
of
Algebra
1
class
that
took
this
course
during
20142015
. These
students
were not
allowed
to
use
any
electronic
devices
during
the
class
. The
experimental
group
included
21
students
. This
group
of
students
was
allowed
to
use
electronic
devices
during
the
instruction
. The
two
groups
were
determined
to be
statistically
equivalent
, by the
oneway
ANOVA
test
on the
midterm
exams
scores
from
each
group
. At the
end
of the
unit
,
students
completed
the
same
assessment
as the
control
group
completed
last
year
and
data
from these
assessments
was
collected
and
analyzed
using
the
ANOVA
program
to
see
if there
is
significant
evidence
showing
that the
experimental
group
performed
better
because
of the
technology
factor
.
Despite
the
differences
in the
instruction
, the
same
assessments
were
given
to
both
the
experimental
and
control
groups
. The
results
of this
study
revealed
that there was a
positive
correlation
between
using
technology
during
the
instruction
and
students’
scores
.
