The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
present
and
explain
the
reality
of the
popular
Puerto
Rican
society
described
in
Luis
Rafael
Sanchez
'
short
stories
and how they
follow
a
series
of
events
that
happened
in
Puerto
Rico
during
the
60s
. This
research
includes
references
to
Puerto
Rican
newspapers
from the
1960s
and
history
books
to
evidence
the
influence
of
social
events
in
Sanchez
'
short
stories
. This
work
exposes
the
life
situations
and the
dialect
used
by the
outcast
social
class
in
Puerto
Rico
as
seen
from
Sanchez
'
view
point
. Also, this
investigation
analyzes
the
characters
and
scenario
used
by
Sanchez
to
describe
the
characteristics
that
identify
the
popular
Puerto
Rican
dialect
in the
60s
and how this
dialect
identifies
the
marginalized
members
of
society
in
Puerto
Rico
. This
thesis
focused
on the
short
stories
of
Luis
Rafael
Sanchez
leaving
out
his
novels
and
essays
.
It
focuses
on
three
of his
short
stories
in
En
cuerpo
de
camisa
: "
Que
sabe
a
paraiso
", "
Tiene
Ia
noche
una
raiz
" and "
Responso
para
un
bolitero
de
Ia
15
".
My
thesis
uses
articles
from the
newspaper
"
El
Mundo
"
collected
by the
University
of
Puerto
Rico
as a
main
reference
to
demonstrate
the
correlation
between
the
social
themes
presented
in
Sanchez
'
short
stories
and the
social
reality
of
Puerto
Rico
from
1960s
.
Sanchez
'
short
stories
revealed
the
social
problems
that
affect
Puerto
Rico
through
decades
without
an
effective
solution
. The
illegal
game
"
juego
de
la
bolita
",
prostitution
and
illegal
drugs
are
social
problems
that
damaged
the
Puerto
Rican
society
of the
seventies
and were not
resolved
by
authorities
creating
an
environment
of
delinquency
in the
island
.
It
showed
the
late
response
of the
government
agencies
to
stop
the
criminality
that
affected
the
country
and
incremented
through
the
years
hindering
its
extermination
.
